Denon PMA-250

I tested the Denon unit you modified in the following setup:

Turntable – DUAL 502 – refurbished by you.

Denon PMA-250

Speakers – 3-way Magnat (Art. No. 144 004) – although they are designed for higher power handling, I don’t think that matters at all in this case; they are good old speakers I refurbished myself, featuring an excellent frequency range from 34 Hz ​​to 35 kHz.

To start, I played a selection of film scores by Ennio Morricone.

The amp reproduces details in the symphonic sections of the tracks much better; I heard nuances I wasn’t used to hearing before.

Then Deep Purple – *Stormbringer* – tracks I know well sounded a bit new to me :-)

Metallica – *…And Justice for All* – the playback is precise with excellent bass separation; the sound is rich and full-bodied, yet detailed and accurate.

I won’t go on listing everything; I cycled through various genres and styles.

I compared the sound against my Denon AVR-2801—an amp I’ve been very happy with in stereo mode until now. While the AVR is technically a higher class than the PMA-250, I think they are on equal footing now…

I am pleasantly surprised; it’s as if the amp has truly “gained a soul” and is performing beyond expectations.
